Case Study - Van Excellence Driver of the Year
Document-storage specialist Iron Mountain runs a very large global fleet, with approximately 220 vehicles, mostly vans, in the UK and Ireland. Head of Logistics Support for Western Europe Rory Morgan is a passionate advocate of Van Excellence – the company is now long-practised at its fleet management compliance and uses Van Excellence as an assurance exercise. Yet when driver Cameron Weir won the Van Excellence Driver of the Year award in 2014, Morgan says the whole company felt the force of pride and recognition all over again.
"We're a big company and we've won our share of corporate awards and I don't want to belittle those. But none of them has ever given me the thrill and satisfaction of seeing our driver – one of the people who goes out and delivers our business in the world every day – ranked as the best. It felt to us all like a vindication of how hard we have worked to be good at what we do."
Morgan confides that, as the UK arm of a global, US-based company, his local news doesn't often get broadcast throughout the business. "Cameron's win went viral. It went right around the world and we had people ringing and emailing to congratulate him."
Morgan says that drivers are at the sharp end of many businesses, delivering goods, performing services and interacting with the public. "They are so often the benchmark against which you are measured. We need to recognise excellence there when we see it and remove the stigma of white van man."
